WASHINGTON—With Congress moving forward with a short-term extension of surface transportation programs ahead of the September 30 authorization deadline, the Electrification Coalition (EC) sent a letter urging lawmakers to extend Fiscal Year 2026 authorization and funding levels, including advance appropriations, under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) in this extension, any future extensions, and ultimately, a long-term reauthorization bill.
The exclusion of funding for programs previously included under advance appropriations would create a funding cliff that could stall or eliminate advanced transportation infrastructure projects that impact our nation’s transportation system, including roads, transit, rail, and fueling infrastructure, and would make it more expensive for our communities.
EC Executive Director Ben Prochazka released the following statement:
“Continued investment in transportation infrastructure is critical to maintaining America’s economic competitiveness, strengthening domestic manufacturing, supporting private-sector investment, and advancing the deployment of light-, medium-, and heavy-duty electric vehicles (EVs). Since the enactment of the IIJA, EV and charging infrastructure supply chains have attracted significant private investment and helped bolster U.S. manufacturing capacity and demand for critical minerals essential to national and economic security.
“Allowing this funding to lapse before a new highway bill passes would create uncertainty for state transportation agencies and private-sector partners that have relied on long-term federal funding commitments to plan projects, invest capital, and expand workforce capacity. Maintaining current funding levels is necessary to meet growing demand.”
