Electric Highways and Harbors: How Florida and Georgia Can Lead on Medium- and Heavy-Duty (MHD) Vehicle and Port Electrification

On October 10, 2024, the EC hosted a workshop featuring engaging discussions and insightful panels on the future of port and medium- and heavy-duty (MHD) vehicle electrification in Georgia and Florida. Attendees had the opportunity to learn from industry experts, network with local partners, and hear about the latest advancements in zero-emission transportation technologies, contributing to the region’s move toward a cleaner and more sustainable future.

Key takeaways include:

  • Georgia has made progress on its electrification efforts, from electric school buses to port electrification, but without the adoption of policies and standards like the EPA Phase 3 GHG Standards for Heavy-Duty Vehicles and the Advanced Clean Trucks (ACT) rule, Georgia and Florida businesses lack the clarity and direction required to invest fully in the transition.

  • Decision makers are at the forefront of MHD electrification. Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA) and Mayor Cosby Johnson of the City of Brunswick, Georgia, are helping move the needle in advancing electrification efforts in the state with local charging infrastructure expansion and advocating for manufacturing investments and workforce development for national security and economic development.

  • Building out workforce development and educational opportunities for technicians, maintenance workers, and drivers to transition easily, equitably, and safely to working on high-voltage systems in electric trucks, buses, and vans presents a dual opportunity to strengthen the Georgia and Florida economies while cleaning up our transportation network.
