Run On Less-Electric to Provide Critical Insights for Freight Electrification

The Electrification Coalition (EC) Is excited to work with the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE) and Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) on their groundbreaking initiative, Run on Less- Electric (RoL-E). Kicking off in September 2021, RoL-E is a three-week demonstration that will showcase electric trucks in their everyday operation. Electrifying the commercial vehicle sector has significant potential for reducing oil demand and emissions in the United States. Findings from our report with the Bipartisan Policy Center and SAFE demonstrate that trucks account for approximately 21% of U.S. transportation energy usage, even though they represent just 5% of vehicles on the road.

One of the most significant barriers faced by fleets seeking to electrify medium- and heavy-duty freight vehicles is the lack of publicly available data on the cost and operational performance of electric trucks. RoL-E is a critical opportunity to overcome this challenge by connecting fleet operators with fleets that have already undertaken electrification, to witness firsthand how these industry trailblazers are paving the way forward with medium- and heavy-duty (MHD) vehicle electrification.

Fleets across the United States must move fast to realize the full benefits of electrification. The 200 largest private fleets in the country operate more than 700,000 MHD vehicles. This small number of fleets operating such an enormous number of vehicles presents a tremendous opportunity for just a few companies to contribute significantly to emissions reductions and reduced oil dependency in the United States.

“The Electrification Coalition is very excited about RoL-E’s September 2021 electric truck technology demonstrations with fleets from across the country,” Executive Director Ben Prochazka said. “This is a fantastic way to showcase the feasibility and all the benefits of MHD electrification.”
